We only formulate with functional ingredients that have solid, human-trialled science to support these specific skin health claims, and we are committed to developing natural products that you can have complete confidence in their proven effectiveness.

help: clear skin Understanding Acne

help: clear skin - What causes acne?

Acne is a very common condition. It is recognisable by areas of spots, redness, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and greasy skin. This skin condition affects 80% of 11-30 year olds.

Acne is one of the most recognisable skin conditions. Despite its prevalence (8 out of 10 teenagers are affected), acne causes social embarrassment, associated physical and psychological scarring and can be life changing.

What is acne?

Many people ask “what is acne” and “do I have acne”? Acne Vulgaris is a simple identifiable skin condition that starts when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores. The most common names for acne are blackheads, blemishes, whiteheads, pimples, spots or zits. When you have just a few red spots or pimples, you have what’s termed a mild form of acne. Severe acne can mean hundreds of pimples that can cover the face, neck, chest and back. Or it can be larger, solid red lumps that are painful, and these are known as cysts.

How does acne form?

Acne starts with the formation of a microcomedo, which is simply a clogged hair follicle (or pore) in the skin. Stage two consists of non-inflammatory lesions, whiteheads (closed comedones) and blackheads (open comedones). These non-inflammatory lesions can then turn into inflammatory lesions. Depending on how severe your acne is, the inflammatory lesion range comprises of small pimples on your skin, small raised spots containing pus (pustules) or nodulocystic lesions, which is characterised by lots of inflamed and non-inflamed firm lumps and cavities which can cause scarring.

What causes acne is still uncertain. The strongest medical leads suggest it is caused by changes in hormones called androgens, or it may be due to alterations in follicular linoleic acid levels, and the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1a (a group of proteins which controls your body’s response to infections). Other factors, such as your genes (if you parents had acne), stress, and diet, may also affect the development and severity of acne.

Is there a cure for acne?

There are acne treatments that successfully treat and control the condition if the right skincare routine is carried out and maintained.

Causes of acne

A few small studies have shown a correlation between certain food groups and acne. Dairy products and carbohydrates with a high glycemic index may be possible causes of acne. However there aren’t any foods that are proven to actually cause acne. A diet high in protein and carbohydrates with a low glycemic index has been shown to improve acne breakouts.

What are the present therapeutic approaches to acne and the causes of acne?

Treatments for acne include topical therapy (which means treating the surface of the skin with products such as creams, gels and lotions) or systemic therapy (such as using antibiotics). Dependent upon the severity of the acme, a single or combined therapy is suggested. In general, topical and systemic therapies aim to reduce hyperkeratosis (thickening of the outer layer of the skin), follicular plugging, while reducing bacteria and inflammation.

The main active ingredients in gel, cream or liquid formulations consist of retinoids and antibiotics. Hormonal treatment is occasionally used for most types of acne in both adult and adolescent females. However these types of non-natural therapies are often accompanied by adverse side effects.

Whatever the type of acne or perceived cause of acne, it’s important to seek out the right type of treatment to alleviate the long term affects.

Acne Treatment Before & After - How help: clear skin has helped

Looking for an acne treatment that works? Have a look at these before and after images of acne sufferers to discover how help: clear skin has helped them improve their skin.

If you suffer from mild, moderate, severe or intermittent hormonal acne, we hope the transformations of our case study participants give you the confidence to try our natural spot treatment.

See below for our participants’ individual stories, from their personal experience with acne to the remarkable difference that taking help: clear skin regularly has made. If you’ve been struggling to find a spot treatment that does the trick for you, remember that suffering from acne does not need to be a long term condition as these stories demonstrate.

“...there is a remarkable difference in my skin...” – Coco Cerys

So today I've had (what seems) like a rare moment to myself and thought I would let you all know about my experience with a months worth of help: clear skin.

First, I guess I should go into what my skin is usually like...in 2 words, pretty poor. I'm not talking acne or anything that severe, but I suffer from a very oily t-zone, lots of KP (keratosis pilaris - the little bumps on your skin that aren't quite spots). Then I get the occasional 'cluster' of whiteheads but when I began this trial my skin was particularly bad for some reason.

How it works: So the product basically comes in sachet form, to be taken once in the morning, once at night. I have to say my main issue was remembering to take it. The sachet can be added to a drink, or food (though I never tried it) and it essentially dissolves like an Alka Seltzer (only with NO foul taste).

And now, for the terrifying part...the before and after photos...NO makeup AT ALL.

So as you can see there is a remarkable difference in my skin. Whether it's just down to using the product, overeating at Christmas (more unlikely) or even hormones I definitely have seen results. Those angry blighters are a rare occurence.

Overall, I would recommend help:clear skin

“I always thought acne would be something I would grow out of...” – Sarah P

Sarah Pinder, 22, was horrified to find that for her, acne wasn’t a ‘teenage’ issue, after suffering with angry spots and sores all over her body for more than 10 years.

Sarah says: "I always thought acne would be something I would simply grow out of but it never happened. As I got older my confidence levels dropped and it stopped me from socialising with friends and family outside of the house. Because it wasn’t just confined to my face, it also really limited what I felt comfortable wearing too."

However, the once shy girl from Dudley came out of her shell after trying help: clear skin.

Sarah experienced such a dramatic improvement in her skin in just a few weeks that her confidence soared. So much so she landed herself a new job and began enjoying getting out and about socialising with friends too.

"Now my skin is looking and feeling so much better I feel much more positive about the future.".

“Even professional beauty experts suffer with problem skin.” – Sarah B

Sarah Baxter knew she would suffer from acne prone skin at some point in her life as several members of her family battled with the skin condition for years. Her mother in particular had severe breakouts throughout her 20s.

For over ten years, Sarah tried to control the aggressive and often painful hormonal spots on her face by spending vast sums on different cleansers, treatments and over-the-counter topical creams. She even tried a gluten-free diet, which unfortunately had no effect.

Working as a make-up artist, Sarah admits she often felt embarrassed and insecure because of her skin condition: "People do look at your face and skin when you're doing their make-up. It does make me feel incredibly self-conscious."

Sarah decided that she had no other option but to start taking a daily dosage of antibiotics to combat the problem. This was a last resort for Sarah, who was never keen on taking prescription drugs due to the side effects and uncertainty around dependency.

However, following a friend's recommendation in autumn of 2009, Sarah stopped taking the antibiotics and started taking help: clear skin, which is rich in natural antimicrobials. After just one week her skin began to clear and after three weeks, her skin was in the same condition as when she was taking antibiotics.

“Since taking help: clear skin, the spots I have been getting are a lot smaller, not as painful and don't last as long. Needless to say I am very impressed, as I have never found anything which has worked as well as antibiotics."

Sarah is now pleased that she can use a natural acne treatment rather than prescription medication. "I really didn't want to be dependent on antibiotics to control the acne, this way I am more in control of what goes into my body, with the same effect."

“It's really helped with my confidence” – Sunddas

help: clear skin FAQ’s

What is PravENAC™?

PravENAC™ is our unique formulation containing a natural milk protein, rich in bioactive lactoferrin. Lactoferrin has been clinically proven to help reduce acne blemishes and help you maintain a healthy, clearer complexion.

So, how does it all work?

Lactoferrin works in two ways. Firstly, it inhibits the growth of the propionibacterium, a type of bacteria that is present on most people's skin and one of the causes of acne. By stopping the growth of this bacteria, lactoferrin reduces the number of new skin blemishes forming. Secondly its anti-inflammatory properties mean that the size of spots is reduced and blemishes heal quicker resulting in a smoother complexion.

What scientific evidence exists to prove help: clear skin is an effective spot treatment?

The effects of supplementing your diet with lactoferrin have been proven in several studies with teenagers, with an average decrease of complexion blemishes of 71% after one month and 95% after two months.

Is PravENAC™ still effective once in water, other beverages or soft foods?

Pravenac™ is a water soluble milk protein complex which means that it can be dissolved in water, beverages or soft foods whilst still being just as effective. This means you can pop help: clear skin in your favourite hot and cold drinks, juices, smoothies and even soups!

Can the ingredients in help: clear skin help with acne scarring?

Yes, help: clear skin is formulated with all natural ingredients that can help repair damaged cells caused by spots and blemishes.

Is help: clear skin a cure for acne?

Using help: clear skin every day as part of your skincare regime will help reduce the bacteria associated with skin blemishes through its antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Positive results are usually seen in as little as 4-6 weeks but you will have to keep taking help: clear skin to continue to maintain a healthy, spot-free complexion.

Lactoferrin is derived from milk, doesn’t milk cause acne?

The link between milk and acne is in its early stages but it is thought that the natural hormones contained within milk, which are similar to those produced during the teenage years, are what can cause acne.

Lactoferrin is a protein that has been derived from the milk, but it has been processed to such a degree that it no longer contains hormones.

I have a milk allergy. Can I still take help: clear skin?

Most milk allergies are caused by milk proteins, essentially the milk whey and casein. Although lactoferrin is not exactly milk whey and casein, it is made up of its components which means, to be on the safe side, we say that help: clear skin is not suitable for people with milk allergies.

However, Lactose (milk sugar) intolerance is a much bigger issue and most people confuse lactose intolerance with milk allergies. PravENAC™ does not contain any lactose, so help: clear skin is suitable for anyone lactose intolerant.

How many sachets of help: clear skin do I need to take every day to see a difference?

In clinical trials, participants took 100mg and 200mg of lactoferrin each day. help: clear skin contains 200mg of lactoferrin in each sachet so you need to consume 1 sachet every day to see the same effects.

What other ingredients are in help: clear skin?

High Extract Aloe Vera which has a smoothing and nourishing effect on the skin.

Zinc Gluconate which is important for protein synthesis and to support immune function.

Oligofructose which is a natural source of soluble fibre derived from the chicory root. Upping your fibre intake enables your body to get rid of toxins that negatively affect skin.

Does help: clear skin contain preservatives?

No. help: clear skin is completely preservative free.

How many calories in each sachet serving?

Only 5 calories per 3.5g serving.

Can I take help: clear skin if I am diabetic?

help: clear skin contains no flavourings or sweeteners so is completely safe to consume if you are diabetic.

Can I take help: clear skin if I am pregnant?

As with any dietary supplement product, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant or nursing.

Is help: clear skin effective against hormonal acne?

Our unique formula PravENAC™ has no specific effect on hormone induced acne. It works in essentially 3 ways - put simply these are:

1. Limiting of the growth of the acne bacteria.

2. Reducing the blemishes associated with acne.

3. Helping repair damaged skin cells caused by blemishes.

Hormone associated acne is caused by hormonal imbalances due to high levels of androgens and testosterone - a condition that can only be treated medically.

However, one of the side effects of the hormonal imbalance is an increase in oily skin which unfortunately is a good breeding ground for bacteria which can amplify the underlying effects.

PravENAC™ will have an effect on helping reduce oiliness and will therefore still have a benefit... and can be of benefit in helping repair damaged skin cells caused by blemishes.

How soon should I begin to see an improvement in my skin?

Taking 1 sachet of help: clear skin everyday, you should begin to see a significant improvement within 4-6 weeks.

Will I be completely acne free eventually?

Although we cannot guarantee that you will be acne free, clinical trials on lactoferrin show that you are statistically likely to see a significant reduction in blemishes.

Are there any side effects associated with help: clear skin?

There are no side effects associated with help: clear skin or any of its ingredients. However, if you generally consume a diet high in fibre, you may experience a slight bloating effect due to the fibre content. Remember, Oligofructose is a natural soluble fibre – so an added benefit if you struggle to maintain the recommended level of fibre in your daily diet.

Can help: clear skin aid Psoriasis?

During the past 15 years there has been strong evidence due to some well conducted studies indicating that Aloe Vera is a proven natural cure for psoriasis.

Aloe Vera extract is a wonderful natural ingredient that has antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. The inner leaf gel of the Aloe Vera plant inhibits streptococcus bacteria (strep), meaning that when eaten it is particularly effective in supporting digestion and detoxification. Aloe Vera, with its abundance of helpful applications, helps reduce inflammation, addresses pathogens and restores balanced bowel function. Many believe Aloe Vera may play a crucial role in the prevention of illnesses that may usher in psoriasis outbreaks.

Is the Lacoferrin in help: clear skin free from BSE/TSE?

The milk used in the production of the lactoferrin is sourced solely from Australian and New Zealand accredited herds which are fully free from BSE/TSE risks - this grade of lactoferrin is so pure that it is currently used in infant formula and therefore produced under the strictest standards in the global food industry.

I have pretty acne prone skin, I usually tend to get breakouts pretty often and my skin often feels lumpy and dry. I have tried almost every spot prone product out there which doesn't really tend to work. On top of the spotty areas I can tend to get dry and greasy skin, so I looked into this product to see if this would work. This product has seemed to work right for me so far. With natural ingredients, I didn't see how. But the product has cleared up my t-zone in terms of the consistency of my

This works great for low-maintenance men who like myself cannot be bothered with male-grooming. I do however like clear skin, especially on my face and this product has helped keep my skin clearer than before.

I suffer with oily skin and have attempted to combat this for many years all the while failing resulting in outbreaks of spots all over my face at any given time. It is a real knock to my confidence. I tried this product as it’s not topical so no skin reaction and it doesn’t smell, I just drink it in water – no one needs to know I use it. And tbf it’s helping. My skin has become less oily over the past month somehow and outbreaks are less aggressive.

I brought this product as I have tried creams and lotions and still had stubborn spots on my chin! I have used this for just over a week now and already I can see a difference. It’s not magic- it won’t get rid of spots instantly, but they are a lot less red and also notice I haven’t had any new little friends pop up since! My skin also looks and feels better and brighter. Will be ordering some more that’s for sure!

Love this product. It’s so easy to take, suits my healthy lifestyle as it’s all natural and I drink a lot of water already as well as eat a healthy variety of foods. Maybe all 3 things work together to help clear my skin, but it was never this clear without it.

I recommend the 84 days pack just to make sure you give this product a real chance at showing you what it can do. Originally I got a 14 day pack – not sure what I expected, but I was disappointed with results. A friend told me to give it a chance and take it for longer, so I did. The result was amazing. My acne scars had begun to lighten, my face was resembling me again. Breakouts were less severe with only a few spots popping up every now and then. This product definitely works for me.
