The three species that produce Psyllium husks and seeds grow variously throughout southern Europe, north Africa and Asia, especially India, and are widely cultivated. The fruit which contains small pinkish or brown elliptical seeds is harvested in August or September. Many find the herb valuable when trying a calorie controlled diet.

In addition to its traditional and current use in the support and maintenance of a healthy bowel movements, psyllium was also used in traditional herbal systems of China and India to help support good intestinal health, healthy blood pressure levels, healthy levels of cholesterol and a healthy digestive system.

Psyllium is a bulk-forming natural product and is high in both fibre and mucilage. Psyllium seeds contain 10-30% mucilage. The effectiveness of psyllium is due to the swelling of the husk when it comes in contact with water. This forms a gelatinous mass that helps support and maintain healthy bowel movements, provided it is taken with sufficient water.

Dosage

2 capsules twice daily taken with a full glass of water. Children between 6 and 12, half adult dose.

Contraindications

A very safe remedy unless taken in large quantities without adequate water Psyllium can then block the stomach or intestines. On rare occasions this has led to the need for an operation. Can cause flatulence.
