Royal Jelly - Food Fit for a Queen
Royal Jelly is a protein-rich nutritious paste produced by bees. All larvae get in the first three days of their lives, after which time, drone and worker bees no longer get to eat this gloriously nutritious food but nurse worker bees continue to feed it to the larvae that will mature into queen bees in order to ensure the selected larvae develop into queen bees. They are specially fed this way in order to make them sexually mature. Those bees who do not eat royal jelly after three days are unable to lay eggs. This is what makes queen bees so special. By consuming Royal Jelly, queen bees grow up to 40-60% larger than worker bees and can live longer by up to 40%. This demonstrates the importance and the significance of what this substance can really do.
Royal Jelly is highly nutritious, containing all the enzymes, vitamins, minerals and trace elements required by the body such as B vitamins, copper, iron, phosphates, potassium, silicon and sulphur. Taken orally, Royal Jelly nourishes the body whilst helping to maintain & support the body’s delicate metabolic processes.

How Nutrabees Royal Jelly 500mg Can Benefit Your Health:
Metabolic Activity: Royal jelly contains all 8 essential amino acids that are necessary for building new proteins in the body and maintaining normal metabolism. These amino acids are known to help increase cellular regeneration, increase muscle development & growth as well as bone strength, and optimise the hormonal/enzymatic processes in our body, which means that Royal Jelly is capable of all of these things too, resulting in numerous other health boosts.
Premature Ageing: As Royal Jelly helps maintain the queen bee’s longevity, so to can its antioxidants destroy the free radicals responsible for premature ageing of cells. These antioxidants can help minimise the appearance of wrinkles and maintain a healthy, radiant complexion.
Infertility Issues: Royal Jelly contains a protein known as Royalactin. Scientists believe that this protein affects the queen’s morphology and helps her become sexually viable. In humans, it is believed to help increase the fertility of men and their sperm motility, helping to increase their partner’s chances of becoming pregnant.
Blood Pressure: Royal Jelly contains a protein hydrolysate, which when combined with the potassium found already in it (which acts as a vasodilator) can help reduce stress upon the heart, demonstrating just how Royal Jelly could help support heart health.
What Other Components does Royal Jelly Contain?
10-hydroxydecanoic acid (l0-HDA)
10-HDA is a specialised fatty acid with many health benefits. As in the case of Manuka Honey whereby the greater the UMF the greater the benefits and the sooner you will feel them, this too is the same for the 10-HDA content of Royal Jelly. It has been shown to possess anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
Gamma globulin is a class of protein. There are different types of gamma globulins - the most significant being immunoglobulin’s (antibodies). Antibodies combine with bacteria and viruses to destroy them making them a vital part of the immune system.
Royalactin is a protein that has been found to create the differentiation between queen bees and worker bees. Royalactin is responsible for the larger growth, faster development time and enhancing sexual maturity (in queen bees) ensuring only queen bees raised on royal jelly will reproduce.

Royal Jelly in the Press
Royal jelly is a thick, milky-white substance secreted by the glands of honeybees. Queen bees live exclusively on it and it accounts for their incredible size and longevity.
Amazingly, queen bees live seven years as compared to the seven week lifespan of workers. They are fertilized once, and from that moment on can lay as many as three thousand eggs a day during the season with each brood equal to two and a half times her own body weight.
As incredible as this may seem, she can lay that many eggs for five years - a remarkable display of energy and vitality that is owed entirely to royal jelly.
And the rich concentrated food is not just useful for bees as it contains remarkable amounts of proteins, vitamins, hormones and minerals.
Studies indicate the effectiveness of royal jelly for tiredness and overwork, anxiety, insomnia, asthma, hepatitis, gout and heart disease. It is also said to reverse the ageing process and boost sexual performance.
The Science behind Royal Jelly
Scientists discovered a key protein known as Royalactin within Royal Jelly. It is believed this is what sets the queen apart from the workers.
Dr. Masaki Kamakura conducted a study in 2011 ‘Royalactin induces queen differentiation in honeybees’. He wanted to discover what created the dimorphism between the two honeybee female castes – the queen and the worker. It has long been known that all larvae eat Royal jelly up to day three, but after this time, only those larvae destined to be queens will continue to consume royal jelly until fully formed.
Dr Kamakura said: 'The association between royal jelly and caste formation has been known for more than 100 years, but the identity of the component in royal jelly and queen development has been elusive.'
He finally discovered that it is in fact ‘Royalactin’ that induces the differentiation of honeybee larvae into queens. Royalactin increased body size and ovary development and shortened developmental time in honeybees.
A low level of epidermal growth factor receptor (Egfr) expression was in the fat body of honeybees further demonstrating that no consumption of royal jelly after day three for worker bees seemed to be the reason for size difference between the small worker bees and the larger queens. Kamakura concluded ‘These findings indicate that a specific factor in royal jelly, royalactin, drives queen development through an Egfr-mediated signalling pathway.
This study provides hope for those considering Royal Jelly for fertility issues, as well as those seeking to maintain longevity.
