Saw Palmetto & Zinc for Improved Men’s Health
Saw Palmetto is an extract from a small palm tree that grows wild in South America and Africa, and has been used extensively for many years. The active ingredients within Saw Palmetto include plant sterols and fatty acids known as phytosterols. These fatty acids, plant sterols, and flavonoids alongside their high molecular weight polysaccharides (sugars), may help reduce inflammation in the body or strengthen the immune system.
Saw Palmetto is believed to work by inhibiting 5 alpha reductase, which is the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is an extremely potent androgen that causes the prostate to grow. It is believed the fatty acids and phytosterol content is responsible for inhibiting the enzyme.
Zinc levels are 10 times higher in the prostate than in any other soft tissue of the male body. It helps promote reproductive health and maintain testosterone levels within the body, therefore, it’s an extremely important mineral for men’s health. But levels decrease with age, and many men, especially those over 50 years of age, become deficient in zinc. By including zinc into the male daily diet, it can help maintain blood levels of testosterone, thus helping promote prostate health into later life.
Saw Palmetto is traditionally used for the ‘all-natural’ treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Finasteride is the conventional drug used to help treat BPH. This is because it helps increase the level of testosterone in the body which helps reduce the size of the prostate. But it appears that Saw palmetto is just as effective as finasteride, but with less side effects (if any) and far less expensive. And as Zinc’s presence is abundant in the prostate, is an effective antioxidant protecting cells from oxidative stress and, is able to maintain testosterone levels in the body. Therefore, Everyman Prostate Saw Palmetto & Zinc 800mg was created to help support men’s prostate health, naturally.
What is BPH?
Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) otherwise known as ‘enlargement of the prostate’, is a common health condition in men over 40 years old, and almost 90% of the men may have this condition by the age of 80.
So, what’s the problem with an enlarged prostate gland? The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, where urine flows from the bladder and out of the body. As the prostate enlarges, it can squeeze or partially block the urethra which can make urination difficult.
Over time, if this persists, the bladder walls can weaken and lose the ability to completely empty the bladder of urine (known as urinary retention). An inability to fully empty the bladder can mean constant visits to the toilet. This disrupts sleep, as well as daily activities such as work, travelling, sporting activities, even eating dinner. The constant need to go can be extremely annoying and frustrating as it continues to negatively impact ones life.
What is the Prostate?
The prostate is an important component of the male reproductive system. It lies just below the bladder and in front of the rectum, and as mentioned previously, it surrounds the urethra whereby urine flows out through the penis. The prostate’s main role is to make fluid for semen. During ejaculation, sperm made in the testicles flows to the urethra. Simultaneously, fluid from the prostate and the seminal vesicles flow into the urethra. This mixture flows through the urethra and out the penis.
This is why decreasing the enlargement of the prostate helps with both urination and fertility and why taking care of prostate health is of the upmost importance. An enlarged prostate can lead to reproductive health issues as well as urinary retention both of which adversely affect many men’s lives.
Saw Palmetto and zinc have both been recognised as have positive effects on the prostate gland supporting its overall health.

Is Everyman Prostate Saw Palmetto & Zinc 800mg Right For Me?
Saw Palmetto has been found to be just as effective as the prescribed medication Finasteride when it comes to reducing symptoms associated with BPH. One key benefit of saw palmetto is that because it is all-natural, the likelihood of experiencing any side effects are lessened. Its fatty acids and phytosterols content help block the potent androgen responsible for prostate growth, helping support prostate health.
Zinc levels are believed to be 10 times higher in the prostate of men than any other soft tissue, but levels decrease with age. Its levels signify just how important this mineral is in the prostate. Therefore, by incorporating zinc into your daily diet you help maintain the optimum levels required for a healthy prostate.
By including both saw palmetto and zinc into your daily diet, you help to support your prostate health which may help promote reproductive health and normal urination (which when is abnormal, can seriously disrupt one’s life).
Saw Palmetto & Zinc in the press
Health Article: Daily Mail: Saw palmetto - prostate problems
Becoming increasingly known as a herb for men, the saw palmetto plant from South America produces dark red berries that promise relief (and a good sleep) for men who suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Roughly half of all men over 50 are affected by this harmless but irritating condition, which causes the prostate gland to gradually enlarge and squeeze the urethra, causing difficulty in urinating and a more frequent desire to try, especially at night.
Saw palmetto is increasingly suggested by doctors, and is offered as a first-line treatment for BPH in Germany. It acts in a similar way to Finasteride, the most commonly-prescribed drug designed to relieve the symptoms of BPH, yet it seems to have a gentle action with very few side effects other than occasional gastric discomfort.
Men with prostate problems may also find they are lacking in zinc, and many preparations combine saw palmetto with this mineral. The suggested dose of saw palmetto is normally 160 mg taken twice daily, using a strength of herb that is 85-90 per cent fatty acids and sterols. The RDA for zinc is 15mg.
Do not self-diagnose BPH - if you experience urinary discomfort, excess frequency, difficulty in urinating or any other symptoms, you must always visit your GP immediately.
The Science behind Everyman Prostate Saw Palmetto & Zinc 800mg
Published in the National Journal of Andrology 2015, researchers Ju XB et al conducted a study titled ‘Efficacy and safety of Saw Palmetto Extract Capsules in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia’. They conducted a multi-centred open clinical study on 165 BPH patients treated with Saw Palmetto Extract Capsules for 12 weeks. At the beginning of the study, at 6 weeks and 12 weeks after supplementation, they compared the International Prostate Symptom Scores (IPSS), prostate volume, postvoid residual urine volume, urinary flow rate, quality of life scores (QOL), and adverse events between the two groups of patients.
They found that compared to the baseline, both IPSS and QOL were improved after 6 weeks of medication, and by 12 weeks, significant improvement was found in IPSS, QOL, urinary flow rate, and postvoid residual urine. 1 participant experienced mild stomach ache, which required no treatment.
They concluded that Saw Palmetto Extract Capsules were safe and effective for the treatment of BPH.
Published in Urology 2001, Gerber et al conducted a study titled ‘Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of saw palmetto in men with lower urinary tract symptoms’. Eligible patients used were 45 years of age or older and had an International Prostate Symptom Score of 8 or more.
After a 1-month of being given only a placebo, 85 men were randomly chosen to receive saw palmetto or placebo for the next 6 months. Patients were evaluated using the International Prostate Symptom Score, a sexual function questionnaire, and by measurement of the urinary flow rate.
Results showed the average symptom score decreased from 16.7 to 12.3 in the saw palmetto group compared with 15.8 to 13.6 in the placebo group showing saw palmetto significantly helped reduce symptoms of BPH (according to participant’s own experiences). The quality-of-life score also improved in the saw palmetto group.
They concluded that Saw Palmetto led to a statistically significant improvement in urinary symptoms in men with lower urinary tract symptoms compared with placebo.
