Bonemax Collagen Extra – For Effective Joint Support
Joint Health is often overlooked if one doesn’t suffer with painful joints. It is important to consider that in later life, joint health may deteriorate simply from wear and tear throughout life. If you are a keen sportsperson, this too can cause wear & tear to joints. Joint pain can adversely affect one’s life, where simple day to day tasks become difficult to carry out due to the pain and discomfort. In order to help support joint health throughout life, a daily joint care supplement like Bonemax Collagen Extra is ideal.
Bonemax Collagen Extra is an advanced joint formulation that provides all the benefits of collagen with added Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Vitamin C and MSM. Vitamin C also contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones and cartilage playing a vital role in the smooth movement of joints.
Collagen is an important structural component within the body. It is commonly known to help support the structure of skin, promoting elasticity and youth. May be ‘less’ commonly known is its presence within bones & joints and the positive effect it has upon them.
Collagen is in fact a structural protein that is found in several connective tissues in the body including bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels. Thus, it is extremely important that levels within the body are maintained in order to keep all these structures strong into later life.
With age, collagen levels in the body deplete. In terms of joint health, this results in tendons and ligaments moving less easily, causing stiff, swollen joints and more. An adequate daily intake of Collagen may help promote easier joint movement, reduce joint pain and even reduce the risk of joint deterioration.
Why add Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM & Vitamin C to the Formulation?
It’s simple - to further enhance collagen’s benefits. Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM are already renowned for the roles they play in joint health, especially when taken combined. Occurring naturally within the body (but that deplete with age), these nutrients need to be replenished through supplementation to help support joint health and function.
Glucosamine can be found in the fluid of a joint. This fluid enables ease of movement and most importantly for it to be pain-free. It helps build cartilage which prevents the two bones of a joint from rubbing against each other (which would cause joint pain resulting in pain on movement and inflammation). Glucosamine is an extremely important substance for joint health.
Chondroitin resides within cartilage and helps cartilage retain water. This therefore helps keep the joint itself lubricated, resulting in ease of movement and that movement being pain-free.
MSM has been shown to help reduce joint inflammation, improve joint range of motion and restore collagen production. It is commonly used by sufferers of Osteoarthritis. MSM makes a great anti-inflammatory as it contains sulphur, which needs to be present in the body to help reduce swelling/tenderness caused by accumulated excess fluid on joints.
Vitamin C is a wondrous vitamin with an array of health benefits. In terms of collagen, it actually help support normal collagen formation which helps bones and cartilage to function normally. This is a vital role in helping to support the smooth working of joints. Joints that function properly are stronger, pain-free.
How Joints Function
Joints connect bones within the body, some are weight bearing and all enable you to move. Generally they are made up of bone, muscles, synovial fluid to lubricate the joint enabling pain-free movement, cartilage (which if becomes worn over time can lead to painful movement, decreased range of motion and as a result osteoarthritis) and ligaments (which can become lax from damage making the strength of the surrounding muscles of the joint all the more important). There are different types of joints though.
Joints in the elbow and knee are ‘Hinge Joints’ which essentially act as a door hinge would with two ranges of motion – forwards and back. Hips and shoulders provide a greater range of movement and therefore are ‘ball-and-socket joints’. Such different joints provide unique points of stability and mobility.
Helping maintain joint stability and mobility through regular stretching & muscular strengthening exercise, through healthy eating (providing the body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally), you will better help your body prevent developing conditions such as arthritis, osteoarthritis or gout. Joint health supplements provide additional support to helping maintain stability and mobility by feeding the joint the exact nutrients it requires to help stay strong and function optimally.

The claim that collagen can stimulate the growth of new cartilage in joints is borne out by recent medical studies which say that patients with arthritic or damaged joints showed improvement in mobility and pain relief when taking the supplement.
A laboratory study has also shown that collagen can stimulate the growth of new cartilage tissue. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body at about 33 per cent. It is present in bones, joints, muscle and other connective tissue. Scientists believe that in some people, particularly the elderly, its production slows down or stops.
Supplements seem to perform the same role as natural collagen in keeping the tissue in joints healthy and supple.
Dr Stefan Oesser, of at Kiel University in Germany, published research which demonstrated that by adding collagen to cartilage tissue, it was possible to encourage extra cells to grow.
'This is the first time anyone has demonstrated that collagen has this effect on cartilage and backs up anecdotal evidence and patient trials,' he says.
'We are still trying to unravel why collagen works this way. That might be difficult to establish because there is a series of complex interactions. But we have at last established that it happens.'
Research two years ago by Roland Moskowtiz, a professor of orthopaedics at Case Western University in America, looked at 400 patients with arthritic knees from the U.S., Britain and Germany. Some got a placebo while others were treated with collagen.
The latter group showed significant reduction in pain and an improvement in joint mobility, with 93 per cent achieving positive results, some after only two weeks.
Glucosamine, Chondroitin & Vitamin C in the Press
Health Article: Daily Mail: Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM plus Vitamin C - joint mobility
Glucosamine is a key element in the framework that supports collagen-based tissues within the body structure, believed to help maintain fluidity of movement and alleviate the problems of stiffness and pain that are normally associated with osteoarthritis and joint wear and tear due to old age or injury.
Chondroitin is a component of cartilage that helps it to attract and retain water. It also helps to support the elasticity of cartilage and joints, and to prevent joint stiffness.
The combination of these ingredients, along with the antioxidant vitamin C, known for its ability to keep the tissues healthy, is aimed towards anyone who may need to prevent or treat joint inflammation, stiffness, injury and improve mobility.
The Science behind Bonemax Collagen Extra
Guillerminet, et al conducted a study titled ‘Hydrolyzed Collagen Improves Bone Metabolism and Biomechanical Parameters in Ovariectomized Mice: An In Vitro and In Vivo Study’, published in Bone (2010).
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrolysed collagen on bone metabolism, especially in the perspective of osteoporosis treatment and understanding of its mechanism of action.
This study was carried out on mice. Each mouse, for 12 weeks, was given a diet containing 10 or 25 g/kg of hydrolysed collagen. Researchers measured bone mineral density (BMD), C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), marker of bone resorption, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), marker of bone formation.
The femur was studied. Results showed bone mass density had improved as had bone strength. There was also an increase in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, which is a well-known marker of osteogenesis (a genetic disorder characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause), and a decrease in octeoclast activity (osteoclasts breaks down bone in order to carry out remodelling, maintenance and repair).
They concluded that dietary hydrolysed collagen increases osteoblast activity which is responsible for the making of and mineralisation of bone. Results showed increases in the external diameter of cortical areas of the femurs.
