Gentle goat milk nutrition
Our story begins over 100 years ago in 1897, when the first factory in our group started to process the high quality milk from our farms into specialized dairy products for the Dutch market. Today our group produces a large range of dairy products, ranging from fresh-liquid to dried-powdered products and from general milk and butter to specialized baby formulas, for consumers and businesses all over the world.
Gentle goat milk nutrition
We know that when it comes to milk and dairy products, most people automatically tend to think about cow milk. This is especially the case when it comes to baby and toddler nutrition. However, if there is one thing that we have learned in the past 100 years, it is that there are gentler alternatives available than cow milk. That is why we developed Kabrita and its range of gentle goat milk nutritional products. Goat milk provides all the nutrition (and more!) of cow milk, while being naturally gentle and easy to digest. This makes it an excellent alternative for the daily milk and dairy consumption of you and your little ones.
'Goat milk provides all the nutrition (and more!) of cow milk, while being naturally gentle and easy to digest.'
We believe that it is our responsibility to provide consumers around the world access to the natural benefits of gentle goat milk nutritional products. We strive to offer these consumers an extensive range of quality goat milk nutritional products and empower them, through education and support, to make great nutritional choices for themselves and their families.
Why goat milk?
Goat milk is the most consumed milk in large areas of the world, and its popularity is on the rise globally. Why are more and more people making the switch to goat milk? Keep reading to find out!
Goat milk: the gentle and nutritious alternative
Goat milk has a number of unique characteristics that make it a gentle and nutritious alternative. The most important are its easy digestibility, its high level of important nutrients and its deliciously mild taste.
Goat milk is naturally easy to digest
Goat milk has a unique fat and protein composition, which makes it naturally easy to digest. The smaller fat globules and relatively high amounts of short- and medium-chain fatty acids found in goat milk are relatively easy for the body to break down. In addition the low amount of αs1-casein protein in goat milk helps to form a softer curd in the stomach and pass through the digestive system more gently.
Goat milk naturally contains high levels of important nutrients
Goat milk contains high levels of important nutrients, including vitamins (A, D, B1, B2 and B12), minerals (calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, zinc and iodine), proteins and fatty acids. It also naturally contains a high concentration of nucleotides, which help to support the immune system and cell growth. Due to its ease of digestion, the body can break down and absorb these nutrients in an efficient way.
Goat milk naturally has a deliciously mild taste
One of the most underestimated advantages of goat milk is its great taste. Goat milk has a distinctive mild taste, which is different from other types of milk. Consumers that have tried goat milk often describe the taste of goat milk as being mild, light, fresh and absolutely delicious. The excellent taste of Kabrita’s goat milk products is also supported by the fact that only the highest quality goat milk is used.
Goat milk vs Allergies and intolerances
Goat milk is, contrary to what people might believe, not a suitable alternative in situations where a cow milk allergy has been medically confirmed. A medically confirmed cow milk allergy occurs when the body triggers an immediate immune system reaction in response to the protein in cow milk. This affliction mostly affects children under six years of age (about 2 to 3%), but can affect adults as well. Experts believe that it is especially the αs1-casein protein that causes the allergic reaction, but despite of the relatively low amount of αs1-casein protein in goat milk, there is still a high risk of a cross reaction taking place.
Although goat milk isn’t a suitable alternative for people with a medically confirmed cow milk allergy, its relatively low amount of αs1-casein protein and its easy digestibility can make it a suitable alternative for people that are cow milk intolerant (not to be confused with a lactose intolerance) or that have an increased risk on developing an intolerance (for instance when it runs in the family). Consumers that are cow milk intolerant have trouble digesting certain components in cow milk (like fat or protein) for a non-apparent reason, leading to a large variety of discomforts, such as abdominal discomfort, constipation, colic and/or mild to moderate eczema. It is estimated that this last group is much larger and varies from 10 till 20% of the population.
For more information on cow milk allergy and intolerance please check the FAQ-section about Allergies, Intolerances and other discomforts below. If you suspect your baby or toddler to have a cow milk intolerance, than always make sure to consult your physician to rule out a medically confirmed cow milk allergy before switching to goat milk.
In Kabrita's gentle goat milk nutritional products we combined the highest quality goat milk with modern formulations. Find out more about this unique combination in the Gentle Nutrition section below.
Nutrition is one of the building blocks of life. From newborns to adults, everyone needs the right balance of nutrition to stay healthy and enjoy life to the fullest. At Hyproca Nutrition, we believe that healthy nutrition should not only provide essential nutrients, but should also deliver them in a gentle and effective way. That is why we combined the natural benefits of easy to digest goat milk with our modern-day formulations to create Kabrita; a range of gentle goat milk nutritional products, packed full of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and/or prebiotic fibers.
Here’s an overview of what these vital nutrients can offer:
Vitamins are needed to support a healthy growth and development. Goat milk is naturally rich in vitamin A, D, B1, B2 and B12. In addition, Kabrita’s goat milk nutritional products have been supplemented to ensure each target group gets the vitamins needed in optimal levels.
Minerals (just like vitamins) are needed by our body to support healthy growth and development. Goat milk is a natural source of calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, zinc and iodine. But just like with vitamins, other minerals might be added to Kabrita´s goat milk nutritional products to ensure each target group gets the minerals needed in optimal levels
Fatty acids (DHA & AA)
DHA and AA are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that support the natural growth and development of the brain and eyes. The body needs these healthy unsaturated fatty acids, but often does not produce enough on its own. Breast milk naturally contains these fatty acids and they are also added to Kabrita goat milk formulas to ensure young children get a sufficient amount of them as well.
Prebiotic fiber (FOS & GOS)
FOS and GOS are prebiotic fibers that stimulate the growth and activity of healthy gut bacteria. Prebiotic fibers are important for the human body, because they support the natural immune system and help to keep the intestinal health in balance. Breast milk naturally contains prebiotic fibers and Kabrita’s goat milk formulas are also enhanced with FOS and/or GOS prebiotic fibers.
Gentle on the inside
All Kabrita products are made from high quality goat milk. One of the reasons that many favor goat milk over other alternatives is that goat milk is naturally easier to digest. It possesses a specific composition that allows the body’s digestive system to break down nutrients and absorb them more effectively. The easy digestibility of goat milk also helps to reduce digestive discomfort for those with cow milk intolerance.
It takes time for childrens’ digestive systems to fully develop, so Kabrita gives it support along the way. Formula also provides additional nutrition for toddlers, who can be notoriously picky eaters. Kabrita goat milk formulas have been enhanced with additional ingredients to support the digestive system of babies and toddlers.
Added goat whey protein
Milk naturally contains two types of protein, namely casein and whey. Of the two, whey protein are the easiest to break down. Breast milk naturally contains a relatively high amount of whey protein (around 60 %) to support infants’ delicate digestive systems. Because goat milk (and cow milk) only contain about 20% whey protein, we add additional goat whey protein to Kabrita’s goat milk formulas to further improve its digestibility.
DigestX OPO-fat blend
Kabrita goat milk formulas are enhanced with our registered DigestX OPO-fat blend. DigestX is a unique blend of good fatty acids, that have been inspired by the fatty acid profile of human milk. Most other formulas use a blend of fatty acids that have a different fatty acid profile and are therefore harder to digest. The OPO fats used in DigestX have a fatty acid profile that is similar to the fats found in breast milk. This makes them easier to digest and also supports your little ones energy and calcium levels, and improves intestinal health, reducing the incidence of constipation.
Why should I choose a goat milk formula over formulas made from cow’s milk or soy?
Goat milk is known as a gentle milk source. It has a number of unique characteristics that make it an excellent basis for infant formula.
- Goat milk is naturally easy to digest (due to a unique fat and protein composition)
- Goat milk is naturally rich in important nutrients such as Ca and vitamin A, and has a high bio-availability of iron.
- Goat milk has a deliciously mild taste that babies love.
Kabrita goat milk formulas combine these natural benefits of goat milk with modern-day compositions, that can be compared to the compositions of premium cow milk formulas. This means that with Kabrita your little one gets the best of both worlds.
What is the difference between Kabrita and other brands of goat milk formulas?
Kabrita is the only goat milk based formula that has a modern-day composition, which is comparable to the compositions used in premium cow milk formulas.
- Kabrita contains additional whey proteins to ensure the correct amount of amino acid is in the formula. This also supports the advantage of easily digestible whey protein. The addition of whey proteins is nutritionally recommended by experts in the field and legislated in countries around the world.
- Being inspired by mothers’ milk, Kabrita contains our special DigestX OPO-fatblend (also known as bèta-palmitate). Breast milk is known to contain a high amount of bèta-palmitate and contributes to the typical breast-fed stools and calcium absorption.
- Kabrita contains the unsaturated omega-fatty acids DHA and AA (LCPUFAs), which support the normal eyesight and brain development of infants. LCPUFAs are important structural components of the brain and retina.
- Kabrita contains prebiotic fibers: GOS / FOS. These fibers have a positive effect on the bacterial composition in the gut by stimulating growth of beneficial bacteria (Bifido- and lactobacilli).
Thanks to this unique combination between a modern-day composition and the natural benefits of easy to digest goat milk, you can feel secure that your little one gets all the nutrients he or she needs in a gentle way.
What makes goat milk naturally easy to digest?
Goat milk is naturally easy to digest due to its typical protein and fat composition.
Goat milk protein forms a softer curd in the stomach, due to the relatively low amount of αs1-casein protein. This softer curd allows the goat milk protein to pass through the stomach and intestines in a gentle way, which may reduce discomfort.
In addition, goat milk contains a relatively high amount of short- and medium-chain fatty acids. These are easily attacked by the digestive enzymes and subsequently easily absorbed. Furthermore the fat globules in raw goat milk are smaller and therefore also easier to break down.
What other advantages can be attributed to goat milk?
As well as its easy digestibility, goat milk is well known for its high levels of nutrients, its low amount of αs1-casein and bèta-lactoglobulin (which can be involved in allergic reactions) and its pleasant taste. In addition, some people experience less phlegm when using goat milk.
Is goat milk formula a safe nutritional source for babies?
Yes, absolutely. There are several scientific studies* which prove goat milk formulas are safe for babies, as long as the formula is enhanced to meet their nutritional requirements (like with Kabrita). The same principle applies to infant formula based in cow milk as well.
Goat milk naturally has a number of unique characteristics (easy to digest, rich in nutrients and mild taste) that make it an excellent source for infant nutrition. Like milk from other mammals, raw goat milk also has shortages of some nutrients that are important for your little ones development, such as folic acid. In Kabrita these shortages have been supplemented to optimal levels to ensure your little one gets exactly the nutrients that he or she needs (the same happens with cow milk nutritional products).
* These scientific studies have been extensively assessed by the European Food Safety Authority and led to an amendment of European guidelines approving goat milk as a protein source for infant nutrition.
What is the difference between cow’s milk allergy, cow’s milk intolerance and lactose intolerance?
Cow’s milk allergy, cow’s milk intolerance and lactose intolerance are different conditions, that sometimes get misused because their symptoms can be comparable, resulting in confusion.
In the case of a (medically) confirmed cow’s milk allergy, an immediate immune system reaction takes place in response to the protein in cow’s milk. This usually happens within hours of ingestion and results in moderate to severe symptoms, which can include:
- Swelling around the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing
- Vomiting and regurgitation
- Severe diarrhea
- Food refusal
- Failure to thrive
- Severe colic
- In rare cases, anaphylactic shock leading to death
A cow milk intolerance can occur when components of cow milk – either the fat, protein, or a combination of components – are digested poorly. This leads to symptoms that can be mild to moderate and can affect the skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems. Symptoms can take days, weeks or even months to present and can include:
- Mild to moderate eczema
- Diaper rash
- Abdominal discomfort
- Loose stools
- Lung and nasal congestion
A lactose intolerance gives symptoms because of poorly digested lactose. Lactose is present in all milks produced by mammals (including humans) and is also called the milk sugar. A lactose maldigestion occurs in many cases after weaning and may lead to symptoms as described below and is in that case referred to as lactose intolerance.
- Abdominal bloating and cramps
- Rumbling stomach
If you are unsure which condition might be causing you or your baby’s problems, than always consult your physician before switching to alternative products like goat milk.
Can goat milk be an alternative in case of cow’s milk allergy?
No, if someone is allergic to cow’s milk it is very likely that there will also be an allergic reaction to goat milk. A cow’s milk allergy is mediated by the protein from cow’s milk. Although the protein from goat milk are different and contain less allergens, it is still very likely that a cross reaction will occur. Therefore we strongly advise against using goat milk as an alternative in case of a cow’s milk allergy.
Fortunately a medically confirmed cow’s milk allergy is pretty rare (only 1 to 3% of children under six have this condition), while there is a much larger group that experiences discomfort after consuming cow’s milk products. These consumers may suffer from a so-called cow’s milk intolerance where components in the milk – either the fat, protein, or a combination of components – are digested poorly. These consumers are likely to benefit from a switch to goat milk based nutrition.
Can goat milk be an alternative in case of cow’s milk intolerance?
In case of a cow milk intolerance to components in the milk – either the fat, protein, or a combination of components – are digested poorly. Goat milk is naturally easy to digest and could be a suitable alternative if a cow’s milk intolerance occurs.
My child is lactose intolerant. Do Kabrita formulas based on goat milk contain lactose?
Yes, Kabrita infant, follow-on and toddler milk contain lactose. If your child is lactose intolerant, then he or she will need lactose free nutritional products. However, a true lactose intolerance (lactase deficiency) is very rare amongst babies and young children, so make sure to ask your doctor or physician to examine your child and confirm this condition.
Can goat milk be a good alternative after a milk free period?
Yes, Goat milk is naturally easy to digest and contains less allergenic protein and is therefore a suitable alternative to start with after a milk free period. In countries like Russia it is the standard procedure to use goat milk after a milk free period.
Please make sure to always consult your physician if you are thinking about using goat milk after a milk free period due to a severe allergy.
Where does the goat milk used for Kabrita goat milk formulas come from?
Kabrita goat milk formulas are made from high quality Dutch goat milk. This goat milk is collected from a select group of Dutch goat farmers, that have committed themselves to produce the highest quality milk needed for Kabrita.
How and where are Kabrita’s goat milk formulas produced?
