DiabetesDiabetes is a metabolic disorder in which an individual has abnormally high blood glucose levels. The condition may be due to inadequate insulin production in the body or the cells not responding properly to insulin. In diabetics, pancreas fail to produce adequate insulin, which is otherwise essential to regulate glucose levels in the body. Diabetes patients experience frequent urination and become increasingly thirsty quickly. Too much glucose can damage eyes, nerves and kidneys. There are two types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Symptoms and Causes

Diabetes can go undiagnosed for a long period. Some common symptoms include:

  • Feeling more thirsty than usual
  • Feeling tired and lethargic
  • Slow wound healing
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight loss
  • Itching and skin infections
  • Genital infection
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Mood swings
  • Passing more urine

Vitamin D, magnesium and calcium can help mitigate the damage caused by diabetes. Increasing intake of these supplements, under the guidance of a medical practitioner, can certainly help in managing blood glucose levels. A new Harvard School of Public Health study suggests that increased intake of vitamins may play a crucial role in reducing the risk of adult-onset of type 1 diabetes by almost 50%.
