Although a definitive remedy for aging has yet to be identified, a recently undertaken international pilot study appears to indicate that subjects taking supplements of Omega-3 demonstrated a significant reduction in one of the key aging processes; telomere shortening. Essential fatty acids, which include Omega-3 and Omega-6 compounds, have already been credited with a wealth of health benefits; this piece of research provides further evidence of the importance of ensuring they form part of your nutritional intake.

Telomeres play a crucial part in the cell division process. With each division which takes place, the telomeres shorten, eventually disappearing altogether. It is at this point that the cells are destroyed. Reduced cell numbers can result in a number of unwelcome bodily changes, including diminution of cognitive function. Omega-3 appears to reduce the level of shortening which takes place during cell division, potentially prolonging the cell’s life span. Whilst the role of Omega-3 fatty acids in slowing the aging process requires considerable further research, these initial findings are promising.

Studies have already demonstrated that Omega-3 supplements may reduce blood pressure and improve cognitive function, as well as potentially enhancing cardiovascular health. They are also essential for normal metabolic function. Other medical studies have indicated that Omega-3 may help in the reduction of the inflammation which is a characteristic of various autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis. To ensure they are getting as much Omega-3 as they need, many people look to supplements to increase their overall consumption. Supplements come in a number of formats, including gel capsules and liquid form. They can be obtained from major high street chemists, as well as online through a number of different sites. Although Omega-3 is not a cast-iron guarantee for good health and longevity, there is certainly considerable evidence that Omega-3 supplements can be beneficial to large numbers of the population.
