Children who take vitamin C supplements are less likely to miss days off school

littlevitA recent study into the effects of vitamin C has found that pre-school children are less likely to develop respiratory infections when taking daily supplementation.

The study, published by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1), saw fifty seven 3-6 year olds receive either a probiotic consortium and vitamin C supplementation, or a placebo, on a daily basis for 6 months.

Those who took the vitamin C supplement were 30% less likely to miss school days due to sickness over the 6 month period. Additionally, the children were 33% less likely to gain upper respiratory infections than those not taking the supplement.

Ultimately, the study concluded that supplementation with a probiotic/vitamin C combination may be beneficial in the prevention and management of upper respiratory infections.
